Fitness and Aging

December 20, 2023 by Kelly MacRae Holland, MSG, M.S.Ed.

In every stage of life—including old age—it is vital to take care of mind and body equally. Though our muscles and strength levels vary from person to person, the same amount of exertion as when we were younger will keep muscles lean and fit. In light of that, we must maintain a commitment to prioritize fitness in our daily routine. Generally, there is no one-size-fits-all with exercise as each body type and ability level is unique. Nonetheless, studies show that exercise when incorporated into our daily routines is beneficial to prevent disease, increases energy levels, lowers risk of injury, and gives us an overall feeling of accomplishment and euphoria.

Seniors can benefit from a variety of exercises which promote overall health, strength, and flexibility to include:

*Strength Training

*Aerobic and Endurance

*Stretching

Strength Training:

Resistance bands, light weights and using our own bodyweight can help maintain muscle mass, bone density, and balance. Thai Chi especially is known for improving balance and flexibility, mitigating the risk of falling and potentially breaking bones.

Aerobic and Endurance:

Exercises such as brisk walking, dancing, hiking, swimming and water aerobics will help distribute oxygen and nutrients properly throughout the body. If it is too challenging to workout for a long period of time, try shorter durations such as in 5-10 minute intervals. It will still be quite effective.

Stretching and Flexibility:

Incorporating stretching exercises is a must as it will increase your range of motion,  help your balance and stability, and release muscle tension. Doing these types of exercises will also prevent stiffness and inflexibility as you age. Stay in tune with  your body and bring awareness to how your body is feeling. You will feel more relaxed and happier with greater range of motion.

Key Point: If you and/or your loved one do not have a plan for daily exercise, start today with something small and manageable to slowly incorporate strength training, aerobic exercise, and stretching into daily routines—you will be amazed at how good you feel with a side effect in a boost in your mood!

At Superior Aging Care, our senior care managers can help you find the resources you need to support a fit and healthy lifestyle in a number of ways with our care management services. Contact us today at (949) 566-1871 or via our online contact form to learn more.
